WACHIRA S HARTNETT
Artist based in Battersea
Wachira is an artist based in Battersea, London.
Shape and colour have always excited and inspired her. After moving full-time to London—specifically Battersea—in 2006, she became captivated by the iconic Battersea Power Station. Its size, presence, and historical connection to the evolving landscape of Battersea and Nine Elms made it the perfect subject as she gradually transitioned toward becoming a full-time artist.
Over time, as developers began dismantling and redesigning the building as part of the Nine Elms redevelopment, Wachira continued drawing inspiration from the strong impression the original structure left on her. To this day, she hopes that impression remains alive in her work and continues to inspire others.
Wachira draws inspiration from many artistic forms; however, she feels a deep connection to the Impressionist movement. Growing up in vibrant Bangkok, her art came to reflect the city’s energy, bold colours, and the shifting effects of light on both urban and natural landscapes. Now, being based in Battersea, she embraces the opportunity to express London’s dynamic shapes, colours, and sounds through her art.
Currently, her pieces highlight riverside scenes and Battersea Park views in and around London. By using palette-knife techniques, she adds texture and depth, bringing London to life on canvas.
